Real Pet Food Co. says its Billy + Margot Insect Single Protein + Superfoods product takes a major step toward sustainable pet nutrition.
Real Pet Food Co., the maker of the Billy + Margot pet food brand, has been awarded Australia’s first licence to import black soldier fly powder (BSF) for use in pet food. After more than two years of research into protein alternatives, the company said it has selected BSF powder as the main ingredient in Billy + Margot Insect Single Protein + Superfood dry dog food, which will be available in Petbarn stores across Australia and online exclusively.
Germaine Chua, CEO of Real Pet Food, said: “Billy + Margot Insect Single Protein + Superfood is an exciting and important innovation that will drive sustainable growth for Real Pet Food Co. We strive to create food that is accessible to everyone. In a world where pets are fed fresh food every day, this launch achieves that goal while also making a positive step towards sustainable practices in our operations.”
Black soldier flies are raised in quality-controlled conditions and fed traceable, responsibly sourced plants. The insects are then dehydrated and ground into a fine powder that serves as the sole source of protein in dog food formulas.
The protein source is rich in amino acids and contains TruMune postbiotics for healthy digestion. Dogs’ satisfaction was comparable to other animal-based products in the Billy + Margot portfolio, based on palatability tests. The company said the new protein source has received approval from pet food regulators in the United States and the European Union.
Mary Jones, founder of Billy + Margot and canine nutritionist, highlighted the benefits of the new product, saying: ‘I know it’s new and can be hard to understand, but trust me, nothing beats it for sensitive skin and overall health and dogs love the taste.
