A spokesperson for Insect Food Pte Ltd, which makes InsectYumz, told Mothership that the mealworms in InsectYumz have been “sufficiently cooked” to kill pathogens and are fit for human consumption.
In addition, these insects are not caught in the wild, but are grown and processed in accordance with regulatory and food safety standards. Importantly, they also have permission to import and sell from the State Forestry Administration.
InsectYumz mealworms are supplied pure, meaning no additional seasonings are added.
While the representative did not provide an exact date, consumers can expect Tom Yum Crickets to hit store shelves in January 2025.
In addition to this, other products such as frozen silkworms, frozen locusts, white larva snacks and bee snacks will be available “in the coming months”.
The brand also expects its products to soon appear on the shelves of other supermarket chains such as Cold Storage and FairPrice.
Since July this year, the State Forestry Administration has allowed the import, sale and production of some edible insects.
